Ready to bake: Equipment and Tools

If you thought you needed all sorts of fancy equipment to care for your Motherdough and make bread at home, you'd be wrong. Most of what you need you probably already have in your kitchen.

  • Digital scale.
  • Digital thermometer.
  • Wide mouth glass jar (conserve style) for your culture
  • Mixing bowls.
  • Sieve.
  • Plastic dough scraper, flexible.
  • Plastic containers with lids for proving.
  • 100% Cotton Cloths - smooth-texture tea towels work just fine.
  • Steel bench scraper for shaping and cleaning up.
  • Baking paper.
  • Razor blade (and a wooden coffee stirrer) or a lame
  • Pressure sprayer bottle.
  • Cotton twine.

While not essential, a liquidiser or stick blender will make it easier to feed your Motherdough, or prepare it for adding to certain recipes.

It would be useful to also have (or start collecting) the following items if you want to take your baking to the next level, or to tackle some more challenging recipes:

  • Stand mixer (See our Kenwood range)
  • Baking stone.
  • Dutch oven.
  • Proofing baskets.
  • Good quality bread knife.
  • Wine cooler for controlled slow fermentation (5-18 deg. C)
