Who is Motherdough?
Motherdough are South Africa’s leading sourdough bakers. We understand natural fermentation like no one else.
We make our bread & pastries using a sourdough process. This process of fermentation was discovered around the year 1500 BC by the Egyptians. Thousands of years later, this process was perfected, amplified and disseminated throughout the Roman empire. Even a modern day baguette is a derivative of a type of Roman bread.
We use our century-old wild yeast starter culture from Italy in all our products. Our starter is a stiff sourdough starter, affectionately called Alfonsina.
Motherdough is based in Franschhoek. We have a purpose-built natural fermentation bakery and retail coffee shop in Franschhoek and a satellite store in Val de Vie, Paarl.
